Objectives of the Basel Convention Regional Centre in Bratislava

The main objectives of the Basel Convention Regional Centre in Bratislava:

  • to strengthen and to further develop the capabilities of the Central and Eastern European countries served by BCRC Bratislava in the implementation of the Basel Convention,
  • to assist Parties with implementation of the Strategic Framework for 2012-21 adopted as Decision BC 10/2,
  • to assist with the Country Led Initiative (CLI) regarding  the ratification of the Ban Amendment adopted as Decision BC 10/3,
  • the strengthening of the CEE countries served by BCRC Bratislava in complying with the technical, legal and institutional requirements for the Environmentally Sound Management of hazardous wastes including the adoption of cleaner production technologies,    
  • the organisation of regular joint training courses on the Environmentally Sound Management of POPs as wastes as well as on the chemical-related issues, on enforcement, on information exchange capacity building and on alternative destruction technology,
  • the knowledge of the current state of waste management in CEE countries and exchange of acquired information,
  • to provide practical assistance to the countries of the region, through:
    • supplementary projects to the workshops
    • development of joint projects
    • comprehensive studies
    • assistance and advisory services
    • promotion and public awareness
    • information gathering and dissemination and Networking
  • to enhance the cooperation and coordination among Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions and continuing of implementation of the joint activities at regional and national levels(the Decision BC 10/29).

It is very important to underline that half of the region is EU Member states and therefore a different approach in cooperation with these countries is needed, especially if they are not eligible for specific financial support. 

 

The Centre, according to Business Plan 2020-23, will focus its activities on:

  • Direct assistance to the region (proposed toppics  for projects and training workhops)
  • Support the synergy process and cooperation between hazardous waste and chemicals management
  • Active participation in partnership programmes and contact groups
